We provide our students with relevant and
up to date information about university courses and possible
career options. Our Head of Careers works together with Connexions
to offer advice to students who need help in making their career
choices. In the spring term of Year 12, all students on Level
3 courses attend a Higher Education Convention to gain an overview
of the whole spectrum of university courses on offer. Our students
are then guided through the process of choosing a university
course, drafting their personal statement, preparing the application
form and submitting the final UCAS application through the Electronic
Application System. Parents and students are invited to attend
a Post-18 evening in July where university speakers are available
to give further advice on choices, student finance and life
as an undergraduate in general. Students wishing to apply
for Oxford, Cambridge or Medical School and for courses which
have high entry requirements are given extra support and advice
on making the best possible application through our Aim Higher
group. Our links with the Eagle Project at St John’s College
in Cambridge and with the Oxford Access scheme play an important
part in this process. After applications have been completed,
all students are offered interview training sessions to develop
their presentation skills. When offers from universities
start to come in, advice is also available on the vital question
of which offers should be accepted and which declined and a
Help Desk is available in school on A-Level results day.
