As a former Dunraven pupil back in the 1960's. I'm glad to see that the Dunraven news which I helped put together with other pupils at the very start, in what was then the upstairs cookery room of the lower school in Adare Walk, which I see now is an adult education centre. Is still going strong. Back then obviously, it was in newspaper form, long before the advent of the home computer. Best wishes to the school & the newspaper.

The teachers that I remember from my "Adare Walk days" are Mr Cheek who was the library teacher. Miss English who was the RE teacher. Mr. Hymus who was the science teacher. Mr. Lovely who was the art teacher also Miss Lowry Though what she taught I cannot remember, Though I do remember she arrived by chauffer driven car every day. Unfortunately she has now sadly passed away though. I also remember a Miss Patterson I think she taught social studies as well as a (forgive me if the spelling is wrong) Miss Nancosy. Again what she taught I don't remember. As well as a Miss Short. Also Mr. Roger Mendham who was the music teacher in the prefabs. Mr Farminer who was the headmaster. The teachers I have mentioned were in Adare Walk. As for what was then the upper school and is now the lower school (Mount Nod Road.) the teachers I remember are: Mrs Ellis the typing teacher who was also my form teacher in the sixth year. Miss Stebbings who was the art teacher. Mr Swan who was the RE teacher. Mr Jackson who was the maths teacher and who had a metal leg. Mr John White who was the English teacher. Mr Dunphy (apologies for spelling) who was the PE teacher. I also remember Margo's Coaches which used to take us to games at Ewell. We used to have to line up in the playground of Adare Walk wearing school caps. If we didn't, we were sent off to find them. I hope that this brings back happy memories to the staff as it does to myself. When they say that "school days are the best days of your life". I know that this is true, because they certainly were for me and I thank you most sincerely for my education.

Hello from Ohio, USA:
I am so excited to have found my old school on the web!!!!!!  simply went to google.com and typed in the name DUNRAVEN -  an amazing site indeed! I was a student at DUNRAVEN 1937-1939 - - it was an extremely happy time - - our Headmaster was Mr Hughes and my final teacher was Miss Driscoll. Everything came to a crashing end in September 1939 - - I missed evacuation with the school as I was on holiday with my parents...  and so never returned. In those days our uniform colour was navy blue with purple lettering.
I have  only been able to locate two old school mates, both in
UK, but we still think of all the others and wonder  what became of them. Back then we had an annual "School Journey" - -(an educational holiday) - In 1937 we spent 2 weeks in Folkestone and in 1938 the trip took us to Cromer! It was a  memorable two years for me . . . . . . .

Regards to all

After leaving I have since passed several exams in electrical engineering and can speak fluent Italian (with a
University of Cambridge qualification). I urge you all to make good use of your time at Dunraven and wish you all the best for the future. The colleges I attended after school were: Croydon Technical College, Wandsworth Technical College and Sackville School (East Grinstead) where I studied Italian.

When I left Dunraven it was still the old school, Adare Walk, and something Gdns. rings a bell!...I can't say I was unhappy to leave though. The teachers as I remember were: "Deadly" Dudly (Head). Mr.Guiseppi, Mr Cox (Science). Mr.Hymas (Also science), Mr.Beggins (Biggins?)(Geography), Mrs. Lowrie (French). And, of course, who could forget Mr.Todd, the Music teacher? There were a lot more, but I don't remember them. I now look back at those times with fondness and quite a few chuckles.

Like Gerald in 1965, I too left aged 15 with no qualifications. Not sure why, I certainly didn't mess around. Without wishing to 'pass the buck', girls during that era were encouraged to be a secretary, airhostess, shop assistant or a nurse. I chose nursing but left in 1971 feeling that there was something missing. I found it in 1990 when I went to college, then university and finally qualified as a social worker in 1995. Now I am a Mental Health Officer (Approved Social Worker for you lot in
England) and loving it. I have been married for 31 years, have 2 children and grandchildren. Who says you are too old to learn. I am still studying as I am now doing my post qualification award. I love nothing better that getting my teeth into something academic. I just wish someone had told me all those years ago that I did have a brain and encouraged me to use it.

Anyone remember:- Deidre Pratt, Jackie Ayton, Margaret Baldwin, Diane Patient, Valerie Pullen, Linda Hibben, Margaret Small, J. Bowman, S.Keen, Elizabeth Sissons and the Nown twins?

Now I’m 20 I do realise how important education is and I will be returning hopefully next year by doing a course.

I have so many memories from Dunraven, it was a brilliant school, and as far as I know is an even better school today.

I loved the way that when you left junior school and went onto secondary, Dunraven had a lower school at Adare Walk, where the then 1st and 2nd years went, you then went to the upper school for the 3rd and 4th years which I now believe is their lower school.

The year I left was the last year you could leave at 15, after that they raised the school leaving age to 16 (shock horror). Mr Swann the maths teacher begged me to stay on and take exams, but eager to earn a wage and with a job to go to I left school.

I have been in constant employment since leaving Dunraven in 1972, I have worked at News International Newspapers for some 23 years, and have received 2 long service awards, the next is due for 25 years. I still enjoy my job immensely, I can only think that this was down to the education that I had.

From what I gather the uniform is still the same (without the hats we had to wear, I hope) lucky escape for some. Not sure if Priest Hill playing fields is still used, but I can say I loved the sport that this school used to offer, I did everything, I have medals for netball, hockey, athletics, cross country, you name it, we did it.

Mr Farminer, head lower school, Mr Cheek my first form master, always remembered by The Hobbit, Ms Lowry, Mr Hastie, Mr Coward head upper school, Ms Veal, deputy head upper school, Mr Jackson, Mme Becherel, Mr White, Miss English, Mr Swann, Mr Bellamy, Mr Jenkins, Mr King, Ms Schoblick and the unforgetable Mr Corbett who was theeeee best story teller ever, he wrestled more snakes than you could ever imagine, and you really wished that your teacher was not coming in that day, so he could fill in, he was really great, I would love to meet him again.

We had houses then, which you played against each other for house points, they were. Gill (yellow) my house yeah!!! Scott (blue) my brother's house, boooo!! Morris (red) Hudson (green).  I think Scott always won. All houses were named after explorers. Good memories eh!!!

Couldn't afford the school trips or cruises at the time, 4 kids in family etc. Enjoy Dunraven, it is not the same as it was when we were there, but please enjoy!!! Would love to go to a re-union, so can someone please arrange one.

Mr Corbett you should be the most proud teacher ever. I believe that I learnt more from you with your wonderful manner & stories than from any other teacher alive. I'm not sure that we learnt all that we should have during your lessons but I wished every day that you would be teaching us. You had a great way of teaching us about classical music as well, even though it was the 1812 based on the cannons used. But it worked. I love all types of classical & remember you with fondness every time I hear the 1812. Where can we find this wonderful man? From what I read here we would all like to meet you again.

I remember the years at Dunraven very well and having a great time there.

I had 3 mates at school: Paul Goodman, Kevin Sylvester, and Simon Fowle and in my last days in London before emigrating to Australia, we met on Streatham Common and chatted about what I would be doing in Australia. They even said I would be back within 3 years, How wrong they were (it's been 28 yrs now). I came back to England in 2000 on a nostalgic trip for 6 weeks and I was amazed to see the uniform had not changed. The main school has not changed except the section between the classrooms and the old metalwork/woodwork building has been altered.

There were a couple of girls in my class I fancied but was too shy to talk to them (still am). Melanie Clark and another one whose name I cannot remember. I remember lunch hall, the metal trays of utensils and some of the kids would scrape the knives on the edge of the tray to make our teeth itch.

I have fond memories of Dunraven and will always cherish them.

Attended with my twin sister Pat Pearce, now sadly not with us. Her daughter Kim Ruff attended Dunraven some years later.  I remember coach trips sports days somewhere out Mitcham way.

I absolutely loved school and wouldn't miss a day if at all possible. The teachers were fantastic, not that I can remember all the names at this time, but there was Mr Bellamy, Mr Corbett who told wonderful stories and there is one which he was telling as the bell went and it has bugged me since the age of 14 to know what the ending would be so I'd love to see him and maybe he could make an ending up. There was Mr King who helped tremendously as I was going to give up Secretarial Duties, told me I could do it and I did. Miss Heinz who married (can't remember her married name), Ms Dancy who taught shorthand.

I didn't want to leave school and they finally had to kick me out just before I reached 19. I remember when choosing subjects for 3rd year I wanted to do Motor Mechanics and Woodwork but had to go to Malta with my family to live. I did return in 6th form when I bluffed my way into typing saying that I could type. I had taught myself the keyboard from a book, but went on to represent the school in an audio typing competition. I was the girl that rode a motorbike to school. I still have a motorbike but keep it in the garage, hopefully my daughter will never get the urge!

If anyone knows how to contact our teachers of the past, then please E-mail me.

I think although I left Dunraven with 3 O levels and 1 CSE I concentrated more on the qualifications I needed in my work which was a structural engineering draughtsman with the Ministry of Public Building and Works. I did day release for the next 10 years after leaving Dunraven in 1965. I passed the g star course in construction. City and Guilds in Construction. City and Guilds in Engineering. Ordinary National Certificate in Construction. Higher National Certificate in Construction. These I gained at Brixton
school of Building and at the Polytechnic of the South Bank. You do need the initial exams at school first to get you on the ladder though, so keep plugging away!!

I lived in Clapham and had to ride the 137 bus every day to school. In all weathers. I now live in
Florida (Tampa) and have the best of weathers. I have an electronics business with a number of young employees. I always encourage them to continue with their education. We have now got some very bright people who thank me for pushing them forward. I enjoyed my years at Dunraven ( two cousins and my brother also went there). ( I left with my 5 O levels and 2 RSA and got a job in Notting Hill Gate. My boss made me go to school and when I was 21 I landed a job with Mitsubishi in London. I was with them for 20 years travelling the world and negotiating contracts worth millions of dollars. At Dunraven I was captain of the cricket team and captain of Hudson House. I was lucky and played good cricket all my life and met many famous people. I travel back to England many times a year and promised one day I will return to my old school to see how much it has changed. Many times I have looked back to those days of riding the bus in my Royal Blue Uniform. Hard work has given me a life that many people have dreamed of. I have a giant size house with a large heated swimming pool. Four cars and an income that I have to pinch myself when I get my cheque. I tell any young person to stay focused and follow that dream. Do not give up even if you fail. Edison failed over 2000 times before he invented the light bulb! There is no such thing as failure if you use the failure and learn from it.

The last 2 years at Dunraven were unhappy for me.  However, I managed to hang in there with the help of my great friend Vicky Morrison (with whom I'm still in contact) and Mr Corbett. I absolutely loved that man. He taught us about life, compassion, adventure (remember the story about him selling his blood in
India as he needed the money!). I tried to contact him when I was last in UK (I think he lives in Balham), I would love to write to him and tell him how he helped me through some dark days). I've been very lucky since leaving school, I married a wonderful man 22 years ago, and we have one son, Jack aged 12. We lived in New Zealand for 10 years, then Singapore and Bahrain for 2 years (each) and now we are living in Dubai. After leaving school at 16 (couldn't wait) I qualified as a riding instructress (was always bunking off to go to the stables), I was a secretary in New Zealand, in Singapore I took the TEFOL course (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and this year came back to UK to do my practical training in Surgical Chiropody. Even though I didn't have a particularly good time at school, I would like to hear from anyone in my class. Do you remember the French teacher? I can't remember his name, he was awfully teased, but such a nice gentle man. It was so nice reading people's memories. Take care, Lorraine

He was a most excellent man and inspired me to start and maintain and interest in photography and my TD teacher Mr Vaal who helped me a lot because at that time I was the only girl in the whole school who did metalwork and technical drawing. If there's anyone out there who was in my class or remembers me please drop me a line.

What a good site - this has brought back some memories reading through what everyone has been writing. I was always known as Emily and was tall and skinny. I used to hang out with Jennifer Ankara, Ruth Maher, Gregory Nicolor, also John Hussein ( his mum used to have the hairdressers near the bakers by the park).  I remember some of the teachers names that have been mentioned. Mr King drove a battered old car . Mr Corbett - yes all the stories he used to tell us.  Miss Heinz.  Also we had a teacher that had a wooden leg.

I have been living in Australia now for the last 9 years and was back in London last year for 6 weeks. I did go by the school with my daughter and showed her. I have been married for 20 years now and have 3 kids - the eldest is 18, boy, then 13, boy, and the girl is 11. When I was back in London I caught up with Ruth Maher and Jennifer Ankara. It would be good to hear from any of the others that remember me (especially if they are living in Australia as well!).

I was in Mr King's class.  The games weren't too bad, but it's when they made you run in the cold weather out of the grounds and all around. Apart from that I did enjoy my time there. Both my brothers went to Dunraven, Clive was the eldest and Paul was the next one down. They were good days, children must enjoy school these days. I know it seems such a long time to be there, but it isn't really. I went to school with Caroline Wood, I remember Janet Hynan, Lorraine Smith. Kim Ruff she had long blonde hair. Ray Butcher. Well, good luck to you all.

It's been just over 4 years since I've left Dunraven. I'm currently taking a year out of uni as I have been travelling around the world and enjoying different cultures and lifestyles, especially the far east. Next year I'll be back to uni and studying finishing of my degree in computing and business. If there is anyone who knew me at Dunraven or from the class 'K' contact me on my email. I would love to hear from anyone who left in 1997.

I would really like to hear from anyone who remembers me or any of my brothers who 'graced' Dunraven's sunny shores! (Joel, Aaron and even Benjamin). I hold fond memories of Dunraven and believe my school life contributed a lot to my later achievements. Hope to hear from you guys soon, hope you are 'all' doing well and are blessed. Comments: Always a bit of a loner at school I could never do games at Ewell and usually ended up being the flag post for the cross county runners to go round, this was due to a bad hip problem when I was younger. I seem to be out on a limb as far as finding my 1927-39 contemporaries - - not-a-one appears in the message list! Over 60 yrs ago - - sure there are a few of us left? I did have an e-mail from Graham Ruck today - he graduated in the 1950s but I remember his sister Marjorie with whom I walked to school on occasion. He has given me her address in Hove so I am writing her and perhaps SHE will remember me.......

I recall that early in 1940 I returned from staying with relatives in Chichester - London had not been bombed as expected and things seems quiet - - - a few children were straggling back...but we represented all ages! Sunnyhill School on Valley Road opened up a one-class affair so that we could gather and have some semblance of an education - - mostly we played word games - which is all that I remember - - - taught by a real eccentric Miss Barlow-Poole - - she was a special lady and well known in Streatham - - always dressed in black riding her bicycle at full speed - she wore a pointed hat and looked for all the world like a witch - but she was a darling person. My parents engaged a tutor for me and I learned Pitman's Shorthand, so as soon as I turned 14 I was job-hunting..........Wound up in Brixton working for an automotive company but was unhappy to say the least - - not the friendly folk I had associated with at Dunraven or Sunnyhill.... I cried myself to sleep every night - - but I couldn't hide the fact that I had been shoved down a flight of stairs by my boss for some imagined mistake. The bombing really got underway and I was sent away to Northamptonshire to relatives - found a job - - - - as Office Manager for a small company which had evacuated from London - so I had charge of about 12 young women........ I was precisely 15 years of age!!!!!!

Well, I must not drag on - -- obviously there was lots more in my life but I never did get back to 'real school' - - did attend evening classes and always an avid reader, so I did end up as Personal Secretary to one of Britain's top industrialists in Westminster . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .until I met my husband in 1959 and moved to America!

Comments: I had some good memories of Dunraven. The teachers I remember are Mr White who was my form teacher up at Mount Nod Road, Mr Dunphy, PE, Miss English RE, the Head Master Mr Coward, Miss Walker Commerce, Mr Jackson (peg leg) Maths, Mr Jenkins, PE, Mr Hymus Science, Mr John, Geography, Mr King, and not forgetting, Mr Corbett.

Reading a comment by Melanie Clark about the houses we were in, she is right, I was in Scott, and we were always winning inter house competitions. Games at Ewell were good fun, went past there the other day, it's just been left like a bomb site now!

Names that come to mind who I hope may go to the reunion, Christine Jones (we have the same birthday), Amanda Potts, Sue Smith, Jackie Eves, Alan Evans, Clancy Zaire, Keith Staines, Denis O'Brien, Denis Fitzgerald, Janice Hill, Dave Neal, Steven Squires, Joe Clarke, Denis Haines, Brien Dickens, Anne Wombwell, Denise Tedder, Jackie Bird, Jean Carney.  I still bump into Chris Clark, & Kevin Hutchings from time to time, received and e-mail from Steve Ottaway, Anne Wombwell, & Terry Palmer, who left in 75, Still have a beer with Martin Smith & Gary May who both left in 75. There are many more that I could name from 74 & other years so anyone that remembers me do send an e-mail.

Just one more thought - we had a great football team that didn't lose many games, one that comes to mind was being 9-0 up in 15 mins against Hillside School......they walked off saying it was too cold !!!!

Comments: I remember some of the names on the website. Rita Whiting was in my class. I can also recall the 2 Lindas and the 2 Julies ... after 5 yrs listening to the same register, these names are etched in my memory! My friends included Martin Menet & Paul Moreton and we were mad on football. I remember going to games in Ewell which funnily enough is where I have been living for the last 7 yrs. A lot has been said about Mr Corbett ... my memory of him is that he was into running and can often be seen running up and down Leigham Court Rd or Priesthill quite often frothing at the mouth! By the time I was in the Upper sixth form, I was driving a White Cortina Mk3 and used to drive to school even though I only lived a few hundred yards away ... and I was always the last to get home after dropping off all my friends! I'd be up for a reunion if someone arranges it (maybe the school can organise something like they do in
America). I'm still in touch with Eddie Nien, Alan Parkinson (cycling champ) and Umesh Vijapura (who used to carry a briefcase to school!) I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

Comments: When I first attended Dunraven school at Adare Walk, we only had games once every three weeks. If it was foggy and games were cancelled we had to wait another three weeks before getting another chance. This was devastating for a lad like myself who loved playing both football and cricket. However, when we moved to the new building at Leigham Court Road, we were able to have games once a week, but it usually took such a long time to get out to Ewell that there was never really that much time left over to have a match of any decent length. Academically, I think the school (in 1963) was a disappointment. I am, therefore, very pleased to see that things have improved in that department. However, I did make a lot of good friends there and we did have some good times. This has left me with some fond memories of my days at Dunraven, so if any of them remember me please get in contact.

Comments:

My memories are mixed as I had been taken from my grandparents home, my school at Ramsgate and friends suddenly and brought to London. I was in shock and found the school discipline and standards low in contrast with my former school. I therefore went from a struggling student to one which found lessons relatively easy. Mr.Coward was the Head and the teachers I remember are Mrs Lowery the French teacher, she did have control. The corridors full of children parted as she walked through and every one stood as she entered her class room. She would wave her hand and point at her chair and someone would dash to dust it. We were then told to sit and she would then sit. The black board had to be cleaned for her before she came into the room. Her class was silent until spoken to while she wrote on the board. I remembered her when I later taught and lectured myself. The other teacher I remember was Mr Shoe. I'm not sure if that is how he spelt his name. We took it in turns in the cookery class to make Mr Shoe's dinner. It was very nicely presented with a sweet on a tray. I remember cooking liver and bacon with mashed potatoes, carrots and peas. Rationing was still in force so I think he did very well out of this arrangement. I don't know how it came about, perhaps he was the only teacher brave enough to volunteer. We girls at that time had a mock house to keep clean, change beds polish and lay the dining room table etc. Most women were at home then, being just wife and mother but it was changing. We now train for professions and to be in the work place plus be house wife and mother!

Does any one remember film making? The teacher was a young man but I cannot remember his name. Three films were made -  one was a cartoon drawn by a boy. It came first.  Our class's attempt came last but was fun to make. I think the good girl was played by Ruby and I played the bad girl who locked her up so I could win on the school sports day. She obviously escaped at the last moment and won. How original! but what a hoot to view it now. I would love to obtain that film and would gladly buy it from any one if it was kept or even have a copy made. I wrote and produced a mime of the story of Bluebeard and padded with cushions I played Bluebeard. If you played Fatima or can remember that time I would like to hear from you. I was deputy head girl and left then eventually went to Art College. My art teacher had done her best to get me to an art college - does anyone remember her name and if she is still with us? The only boys I can remember the names of are Derek Bond? who could drink four bottles of milk in one go and BRIAN HUNT because I liked him and thought him handsome. I was very shy of boys and did not think he would even notice me, as there was a class beauty I thought he liked. He was leaving to go college or Cambridge and to my surprise he slipped me his telephone number. I foolishly showed this folded piece of paper to a friend Josephine who snatched it away and ran so the phone number was gone. The person I would very much like to find is NANCY NEAL. She lived at Beaufoy House, West Norwood. Her father died and her mother wanted to get away. She took Nancy and her sister to Canada. We were close friends and my last letter to her in about 1954-55 was returned as she had moved on. I think of her often as at that time she was very unhappy. I do hope she is happy now and would dearly like to chat with her. If any one knows where she is now please e-mail me. My time was obviously at the old school. My brother Alan also attended Dunraven.

I remember a boy named Miller who was a bit of a lad. I remember a history master who handed out polished half pennies as prizes for good work. I also remember Mrs Lowery and Mr Coward the Headmaster. In 1963 I emigrated to America, and have lived in Southern California ever since. I have three sisters and two brothers who live in the London area so I go home every few years to visit. I would like to get in contact with anyone who remembers me or attended Dunraven at the same time as me. My uncle Cyril Rousseau and his son Cyril, were involved in the Film Club I think. I remember in the Film Club watching the movie "Oliver Twist" and learning about camera techniques . Will add more as time, memory and hopefully input from other students allows.
